Bach Flower Remedies

Dr Edward Bach was a successful medical doctor with a lucrative Harley Street practice in the early 1900s. Yet, despite his apparent success as a well known Physician, Bacteriologist, Homeopath and Researcher, he always felt dissatisfied and unfulfilled with the way doctors were expected to concentrate on disease symptoms and ignore the people who were suffering from them. In 1930 he became gravely ill, and following surgery he was told that he had three months to live. At this point he gave up the Harley Street practice and left London, determined to devote the rest of his life to a new system of medicine that he was sure could be found in nature.

Dr Bach believed that attitude of mind plays a vital role in maintaining health and recovering from illness and wanted to find something that treated the cause rather than the symptom. After identifying 38 basic negative states of mind and spending several years exploring the countryside, he managed to create a plant or flower based remedy for each one.

Dr Bach grouped these 38 negative states of mind into seven main groups, which have recently been give more up to date names by the Dr Edward Bach Centre, (the trust which continues Bach's unadulterated work to this day). Rescue Remedy® :

For emergency situations, Dr. Bach created a combination of Bach Flower that he called Rescue Remedy®, which is composed by the 5 remedies: Impatiens, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum, Rock Rose and Clematis. The Rescue Remedy® Cream is also available, which also includes Crab apple, for external used as a ointment.

The base indications for Rescue Remedy® are:

  • Acute and emergency cases;

  • Anticipatory suffering situations (before exams, interviews, dentist, surgery, etc.);

  • It also could be used after acute situations, such as post surgery, etc..

The remedies come as a liquid, preserved in brandy. To take them, you dilute two drops of each remedy that you need into a 30ml dropper bottle, top up with mineral water, and take four drops four times a day. Alternatively you can put the two drops into a glass of water, and sip from that at intervals.

It is usual to take six or seven remedies together at the same time, and this is the maximum recommended by the Dr Edward Bach Center. Dr Bach is known to have given nine remedies together on two occasions, but these were exceptions.

when looking through the remedy descriptions, it's quite usual for people to feel they need many more than six or seven remedies, but this is not recommended. It is important to narrow the remedies down by contemplating your current state of mind, remembering you are looking for the feeling or effect, rather than the cause. So if your twelve remedies include five that are really for things you felt yesterday or last week or ten years ago, then those are the ones you can leave out at this stage. Treat the main feelings you have now, and when the remedies have dealt with these you can then move on to the issues that were in the background.

As you work with the remedies you will 'Peel the Onion'; pull away layers of emotions that have been weighing you down. Some of these emotions will have been stuck for years, especially buried grief and resentment, however, always treat in the present; the way you are feeling today, and watch these amazing little bottles of tincture work their magic.
